Stickers were stuck to parking meters around Dunedin yesterday signalling free parking at the council’s meters until further notice. The council has not charged for parking at its meters since March 26.

During Alert Levels 4 and 3 the free parking was to help essential workers.

Ongoing free parking was a resolution passed by the council on May 15 as part of a package of measures to make the CBD safer for pedestrians to stay physically separate and encourage people to visit shops and help the local economy.

The free parking will be reviewed by councillors monthly.

People still need to adhere to time limits and other restrictions or infringements may be issued.

Parking revenue to the council is usually about $135,000 a week.
