Latest Conference News

The Executive Committee met on December 3rd for the first time since the successful conference held in New Plymouth.  We took time to discuss the evaluation forms that many of the delegates submitted and have very much taken on board the comments that have been made.  There were some comments made that are beyond the control of the Executive – for example we have no control of the weather!  There was also reference made to the fact that there was too much to drink!  Well, that comes down to the individual – we have no control over what enters the mouths of the delegates.

As stated above, the majority of comments were very positive and some good ideas have been raised as well.  We will do our best to get some of the speakers that have been requested but I think that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Helen Clarke could be quite difficult to acquire!

Plans are now underway for the next conference to be held in Taupo at the

Bayview Wairakei Resort.  The meeting was actually held at the resort so that we could inspect the premises and ensure that everything would be to the satisfaction of the delegates.  We can assure you it is quite something.  The rooms are all of a very good standard, as are the rest of the facilities.  A location map of the resort is attached so that you can get some idea of the layout of the premises.  Click here to view the map

The Fitness Centre has everything that a fitness buff could want.  There is a gym with all the ‘gear’ to work up a good sweat.  If you want a good sweat without the effort there is even a sauna.  For those that really want to ‘lax out’ there are two spas as well.

There are two pools for those that like to have a dip – and both were warm!  The outdoor pool located by the Conference Centre and bar is very pleasant and really more for lounging about.  However, for those that like to actually swim there is a swimming pool located on the outskirts of the complex.  A few lengths of the pool at the beginning of the day in the very pleasant surroundings around the pool would really get the brain going!

Then there is tennis, squash, golf and walking.  There is a very pleasant bush-type walk that goes around the outskirts of the complex and it follows the path of a hot stream – the name of which escapes me at the point of writing.  Providing that all the delegates aren’t walking at the same time it will be a very peaceful area to unwind at the end of the day.  For bird-watchers there are a number of interesting birds around as well!

We have already contacted some speakers – but we won’t mention who at this point in time as we need to have confirmation etc.

We have also decided that as it is 25 years since the New Zealand Parking Association was formed we should have a formal conference dinner to celebrate.  So, we are giving you plenty of warning!  Men – we require you to wear suits and ties.  Ladies, evening wear please.  We are going to be quite strict on this – if any delegate turns up for the dinner wearing casual gear that delegate will be eating outside!  So guys and gals, you have 10 months in which to get some gear together.

For those that live some distance from Taupo and will need to fly to the venue, we would suggest that you get your Local Authority to book the flights well in advance.  This will save quite a bit of money and will also ensure that there is a seat available.  If bookings are left to the last minute you will certainly pay a much higher price for the seat on the plane.

On a final note we would like to point out that the venue is quite a distance from Taupo town so do not expect to pop to the shops during the lunch breaks.  I am sure there will be opportunities to visit the town, but a vehicle will be required.

Watch this space as Alison and I will be keeping you informed of events as we go.  We will also be putting other items on the website from now on and hope that we can keep you up to date with all aspects of parking.

Jean Douglas, Executive Member from Rotorua District Council
